ACHP Policy Statement on Promotion and Value of Traditional Trades Training (2020)

Critical to the historic preservation movement is the availability of skilled tradespeople. Restoration work on historic buildings simply cannot be done without skilled workers, making the training of new craftspeople a critical priority. This policy statement discusses the need for and the benefits of expanded traditional trades training; suggests key principles that should guide federal, state, and local workforce development and training efforts; and offers recommendations for federal action.

As the number of skilled workers in the construction trades has plummeted in recent years, the shortage of skilled preservation craft workers has continued to grow. Restoration work on historic buildings simply cannot be done without skilled workers, making the training of new craftspeople a critical priority.

Partners to Work Toward Preservation Workforce Development

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) Chairman Aimee Jorjani today announced the formation of the ACHP Traditional Trades Training Task Force, which will work to promote the development of a robust workforce in the skilled preservation trades.

Office of Policy and Legislative Affairs

The Office of Policy and Legislative Affairs (OPLA) develops preservation policy recommendations, analyzes legislation proposed at the federal/state/local levels and Executive Branch policy initiatives, and participates in ACHP programs and research related to major national preservation issues.
