In the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (NHPA), Congress established a comprehensive program to preserve the historical and cultural foundations of the nation as a living part of community life. It was passed in response to widespread citizen concern that federally planned or assisted projects—like the construction of the interstate highway system and urban renewal—were destroying irreplaceable pieces of our shared heritage.
The Preserve America Executive Order (EO 13287) directs federal agencies to advance the protection, enhancement, and contemporary use of federal historic properties and to promote partnerships for the preservation and use of historic properties, particularly through heritage tourism.
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Section 106 Agreements Database is a collection of VA Memoranda of Agreements (MOAs) and Programmatic Agreements (PAs) from across the country, dating from 1974 to present. This database provides users with a way to find previously executed VA agreements that may serve as reference for current projects requiring a MOA or PA.
