This illustrated report summarizes the findings of a 1979 ACHP study on the contributions of historic preservation activities to urban revitalization. The data were derived from studying four historic districts - Old Town in Alexandria, Virginia; The Strand in Galveston, Texas; the Savannah Historic District in Georgia; and Pioneer Square in Seattle, Washington. The report summarizes the esthetic, economic, and social benefits of historic preservation in each district.

The ACHP has received a number of inquiries regarding the Section 106 responsibilities of federal agencies with regard to the development of on and off-shore wind farms. We are specifically asked what kinds of federal actions related to the development and operation of wind farms make such projects “undertakings” subject to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and its implementing regulations, “Protection of Historic Properties” (36 CFR 800).
  7. Guidance Document
Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act requires federal agencies to conduct a historic preservation review whenever they carry out, license, permit, approve, or assist a project that has the potential to affect historic properties. Often, federal projects are accomplished by nonfederal parties who receive the federal license, permit, approval, or financial assistance.
