Preservation of the Cascade Historic City Jailhouse & Cascade Historic Limestone Silo

The mission of the Cascade Community Enhancement Corporation is to improve the quality of life for residents of Cascade, Iowa, through historical, recreational, and cultural enhancements. The City of Cascade relies heavily on the Corporation for planning and implementation of historic preservation projects in the community, and the work of Corporation volunteers has been essential to the success of such projects.

Through the efforts of the Corporation, the Historic City Jailhouse (built ca. 1850) has been rehabilitated as a community welcome center. Another important project was restoration of a 1930s historic limestone silo as an agricultural interpretive center. The interpretive center is a partner site with the Silos and Smokestacks National Heritage Area, and, in 2010, the Corporation received the “Outstanding Volunteer Award” from the Heritage Area.

Corporation volunteers provided much of the hands-on labor needed to rehabilitate the historic jail and silo, and volunteers also serve as docents at the sites. The Corporation involves youth as volunteers, working with local 4-H clubs and Scout groups.

Designated a Preserve America Steward in February 2011.
