This is the second triennial Report to the President required under Executive Order 13287: “Preserve America,” addressing the state of the federal government’s historic properties and their contribution to local economic development.

This handbook presents recommendations for federal agencies, applicants, and Indian tribes to work together in pre-application information gathering or prior to initiating the Section 106 process.

Mrs. Laura Bush, honorary chair of the Preserve America initiative, led a national Preserve America Summit October 18-20, 2006, in New Orleans, Louisiana, marking the 40th anniversary of the passage of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation was a partner and served as Summit coordinator. 

Report prepared pursuant to Section 213 of the National Historic Preservation Act regarding the effects of the Highwood Generating Station on the Great Falls Portage National Historic Landmark, Great Falls, Montana.

The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation published an exemption that relieves federal agencies from the requirement of taking into account the effects of their undertakings on historic natural gas pipelines.

In response to a joint request from the House Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs, Subcommittee on National Parks and Public Lands, and the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation undertook an analysis of preservation issues concerning Federal support for highly scientific and technical facilities. The analysis considered the appropriate role of historic preservation in decisionmaking about the operation and management of these facilities. An update is forthcoming.
