Verde Reservoirs Sediment Mitigation Project (AZ)

Case Details

Arizona

The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, Phoenix Area Office, is proposing to develop a project-specific programmatic agreement for the Verde Reservoirs Sediment Mitigation Project (VRSMP). In 2020 and 2021, Reclamation, in partnership with the Salt River Project Agricultural Improvement and Power District, conducted the Verde Reservoirs Sediment Mitigation Study. The purpose of the Study was to conduct an appraisal level investigation of the sediment accumulation and subsequent reduced water storage capacity in the Verde River reservoir system and to develop alternatives to restore lost capacity and mitigate future sediment accumulation. In November 2021, the project was authorized by Section 40902 of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, Public Law 117-58 (commonly referred to as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law [BIL]). Consistent with the Reclamation Manual’s Directive and Standards for Water and Related Resources Feasibility Studies (CMP 09-02) and as required by the BIL, Reclamation identified the Salt River Project as the non-federal project cost share partner. The feasibility study and implementation of the resulting alternative(s) developed through the feasibility study process are an undertaking subject to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, as amended. The overall purpose of the project is to investigate and analyze the design of the Bartlett Dam modification alternatives identified as viable for feasibility-level analysis in the VRSMP, at least one non-structural sediment and water management alternative, the no-action alternative, and any other alternatives developed through the feasibility-level alternative identification process. At the conclusion of the Project, a feasibility study report will be produced.
