Incidental Take Permits for Forestry Management and Operations on Forest, Park, and Game Lands in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (PA)
Case Details
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) has received an application from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) and Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC) for an Incidental Take Permit (ITP) pursuant to Section 10(a)(1)(B) of the Endangered Species Act regarding individual projects associated with forestry management, forestry operations, roads and trails, and prescribed fire on forest, park and game lands in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. ITP’s are issued to non-federal entities when their otherwise lawful activities may result in a take of endangered or threatened animal species. Forest management strategies and uses for these lands have the potential to impact the foraging, roosting, maternity colony, spring staging, fall swarming and migratory habitat for bat species including the federally endangered Indiana bat and federally threatened northern long-eared bat. To receive an ITP, the DCNR and PGC must develop a habitat conservation plan to ensure that the effects of the incidental take are adequately minimized and mitigated.
