Saratoga Springs (population 26,186) was founded at the site of naturally carbonated mineral springs from which the city gets its name. During the 19th century, the community became a renowned health resort whose popularity only grew with the introduction of thoroughbred racing and casino gambling.
The city recently has bounced back from a post-World War II malaise and is again becoming a hot resort spot in upstate New York. Its popularity as a tourist destination is due in no small part to its historic ambience.
The city has seven historic districts listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is a New York State Heritage Area. The heritage area visitor center is located in a 1915 trolley station. The City of Saratoga Springs is currently working with the non-profit Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation and other partners to revitalize the West Side Historic District.
The city has targeted $200,000 in grants for the area and has helped support redevelopment on Beekman Street, once considered one of the least desirable streets in the city and now an emerging arts district.
Designated a Preserve America Community in August 2004.
