William Clark, of Lewis and Clark expedition fame, founded Paducah (population 26,000) in 1827, the only major city in the Commonwealth of Kentucky with an Indian name.

The community's early growth was due to its strategic location at the confluence of the Ohio and Tennessee Rivers.

Today visitors can discover more of Paducah's history while strolling along brick sidewalks past turn-of-the-century buildings where historic markers line the streets. Paducah has more markers interpreting historic sites than any other Kentucky city.

Paducah's Artist Relocation Program is a national model for revitalizing deteriorating neighborhoods. A public/private partnership, the program encourages artists to purchase properties for homes, studios, and related businesses in the historic Lowertown area by offering financial incentives and a supportive environment.

Designated a Preserve America Community in April 2004.
