WASHINGTON, DC – Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) Vice Chairman Travis Voyles welcomes Kyle Scherer of Hyattsville, Maryland, as an ACHP Expert Member. Scherer was appointed by President Donald J. Trump and was sworn in on January 9 for a term ending in 2027.

“Kyle Scherer brings a wealth of valuable experience, including in Tribal and environmental policy, to the ACHP,” Vice Chairman Voyles said. “Kyle has distinguished himself in every role he has held in the federal government and his expertise will be important to the Council’s work.”

Scherer is a partner in the Environmental and Natural Resources Group at Venable LLP and chair of the firm’s Native American Law and Policy Practice.  He has held numerous positions in federal and state government, including service during the first Trump Administration as Principal Deputy General Counsel for the Council on Environmental Quality (a member of the ACHP), Deputy Solicitor for Indian Affairs at the U.S. Department of the Interior, and Counsel to the Associate Attorney General at the U.S. Department of Justice.

“I’m honored to join the ACHP and am hopeful that my background and experience in environmental and federal Indian law will help guide policy decisions that support thoughtful consideration of historic properties,” Scherer said.  

Scherer is originally from Dover, Ohio. He is a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School, and began his legal career working on the Navajo Nation in Arizona. In 2024, he was appointed a Trustee for the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, where he serves on the Appeals Committee for repatriation decisions. Additionally, Kyle is an Army combat veteran and Bronze Star Medal recipient, with deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq.
