Kyle Scherer is a partner in the Environmental and Natural Resources Group at Venable LLP and chair of the firm’s Native American Law and Policy Practice. He has held numerous positions in federal and state government, including service during the first Trump Administration as Principal Deputy General Counsel for the Council on Environmental Quality, Deputy Solicitor for Indian Affairs at the U.S. Department of the Interior, and Counsel to the Associate Attorney General at the U.S. Department of Justice.
Scherer is originally from Dover, OH and now resides in Hyattsville, MD. He is a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School and began his legal career working on the Navajo Nation in Arizona. In 2024, he was appointed a Trustee for the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, where he serves on the Appeals Committee for repatriation decisions. Additionally, he is an U.S. Army combat veteran and Bronze Star Medal recipient, with deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq.
