U.S. Army Garrison, Alaska (USAG Alaska) proposes to develop training assets in the Blair Lakes region of Tanana Flats Training Area (TFTA). Projects include brushing out old trails, clearing new trails, opening gravel pits, and creating new all-seasons roads. Year-round increases in military training in the TFTA are expected after these improvements are made. A series of project phases are proposed and will require vegetation removal and ground disturbance with mechanized equipment. The projects include: (1) vegetation removal to brush out parts of an old trail system; (2) geotechnical survey with ground disturbance for gravel sources; (3) vegetation removal to create new connector trails; (4) side-slope excavation for steep terrain approaches; (5) ground disturbance with a skid steer to level all-season trails; (6) excavation of gravel pits in up to five locations; (7) excavating culverts for stream crossings; (8) hardening trails by adding gravel; and (9) vegetation removal to create clearings for firing points.
