Case Details

Fort Jackson
The United States Army Garrison, Fort Jackson is the Department of the Army's main production center for Basic Combat Training. The Army has identified the need for additional space and plans to demolish the existing 120th Adjutant General Battalion Headquarters and Reception Complex, Building 1895, and construct a new headquarters and reception building. Building 1895 is in the cantonment area of the installation and the Army has determined that the undertaking will have an adverse effect to Building 1895 (SC SHPO Site Number 8508), which is individually eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). Army considered all practicable alternatives to demolition and found demolition more cost-efficient than renovation. Consultation resulted in the development and execution of the "Memorandum of Agreement Between the United States Army Garrison Fort Jackson, the South Carolina State Historic Preservation Officer, and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation Regarding the Demolition of Building 1895, Fort Jackson, South Carolina, in February 2026. Mitigation measures include documentation of Building 1895 following HABS Level II standards with review by the NPS to ensure the documentation meets the standards prior to demolition.
