This course was prepared for the Forest Service by the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) to provide Forest Service staff an overview of the requirements of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA).  Under Section 106 of the NHPA, the Forest Service is required to consider the effects of its programs, projects, and activities on historic properties, and to consult with stakeholders prior to approving or authorizing implementation. The course prepares Forest Service staff to participate in, support, and lead Section 106 reviews, by learning when a review is needed, their roles and responsibilities in a review, and who to contact for assistance. Any consulting party will learn what the Forest Service expects of its staff in Section 106 reviews.
