Preserving America's Heritage: National Historic Preservation Act 40th Anniversary Newspaper Insert

October 10, 2006

To coincide with the 40th Anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), the ACHP developed a newspaper insert that focuses on the importance of historic preservation and the historic preservation infrastructure that was created by the NHPA. The insert was developed in partnership with the History Channel and the Newspaper In Education Institute. It first appeared in the Washington Times.

To make the topic of historic preservation interesting and relevant to students in particular, and newspaper readers in general, the publication focuses on stories of America’s heritage that are accessible to contemporary people through existing structures and places, and to some extent artifacts, related to these episodes. There is a particular emphasis on places that exist due to the preservation infrastructure created by the NHPA.

A more detailed companion piece for teachers also was developed.
