WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Donald J. Trump has appointed Travis Voyles of Virginia as an expert member of the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) and has designated him vice chairman. His term will expire in June 2026.
Voyles, who will serve as ACHP vice chairman in his personal capacity, has been the Assistant Deputy Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) since January. Prior to that, he was the Secretary of Natural and Historic Resources for Virginia, where he advised Gov. Glenn Youngkin and oversaw five state agencies that protect and restore Virginia’s natural and historic resources, including the Virginia Department of Historic Resources, the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO).
“I am honored to serve as vice chairman and look forward to working with the other ACHP members, federal agencies, and key stakeholders to celebrate our nation’s history and continue the important work of ensuring the preservation of America’s historic places,” Voyles said.
During the first Trump Administration, Voyles worked in various leadership roles at EPA, including leading the Office of Congressional and Intergovernmental Relations. He also has served on staff for the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works under Sen. Shelly Moore Capito, and the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology.
Voyles received his law degree from Florida State University College of Law, with a certificate in Environmental, Energy, and Land Use Law. He earned a Masters in City and Regional Planning from Georgia Institute of Technology, and a Bachelors in Environmental Economics and Management from the University of Georgia.
“Travis Voyles is a respected leader and expert on historic preservation, having worked to manage and protect the environment and historic resources of Virginia and the nation for many years,” ACHP Executive Director Reid Nelson said. “He has a wealth of knowledge and experience which we know he will utilize well in his new leadership role.”
Currently, the full-time ACHP chairman’s position is vacant. Voyles will carry out the functions of the chairman until a new chairman is sworn in after being nominated by the President and confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
