WASHINGTON, D.C. – At the invitation of the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission, the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) is now a member of the America 250 Parks, Preservation, and Public Spaces Task Force (P3). Chairman Aimee Jorjani last week attended the first meeting of the task force convened to promote preservation of parks and historic sites for the commemoration of the nation’s 250th birthday in 2026.

Leading up to 2026, Americans will come together for the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. The events associated with it provide an opportunity to learn from the democratic ideals enshrined in the Declaration of Independence. The P3 task force will explore programs to preserve and promote the legacy of the built and natural environment that can assist with telling this American story. The P3 task force comprises both public and private entities.

“It is a great honor to be part of the task force and ensure the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation is an active participant in the Semiquincentennial activities,” Chairman Jorjani said. “Our involvement is a great opportunity to highlight the places that tell the American story. While these places can contribute to the commemoration, they also can impact the future with historic preservation and cultural resources policy with the potential of having a lasting impact on our country.”

The recent meeting focused principally on task force member ideas and initial brainstorming. Notably, the National Park Service (NPS) announced it is developing a strategic plan for the agency’s Semiquincentennial activities that is scheduled for completion this summer. Chairman Jorjani encouraged NPS to fully integrate its partnership programs (such as Teaching with Historic Places and Discover Our Shared Heritage Travel Itineraries) into its planning. Task force members identified other national groups that might contribute to its work and potentially could be asked to join the group.

In addition to the ACHP, the P3 task force includes members of the Commission and representatives of the America 250 Foundation; American Battlefield Trust; NPS; National Park Foundation; National Parks of New York Harbor Conservancy; Daughters of the American Revolution; and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
