Experimental Plane Extraction Project Within Hanford Reach National Monument (WA)

Case Details

Washington
On July 12, 2020, a small, two-seat, experimental airplane made an emergency landing on the Rattlesnake Unit of the Hanford Reach National Monument (HRNM), which is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). USFWS proposes to extract the plane by lifting it by hand and placing it on a small, three-wheeled metal cart. The rubber-tired cart will then be attached to a two-mile long cable and winched downslope to the 1200-foot road. As the cart holding the plane is pulled towards the road, the crew will walk alongside the plane to ensure that the plane remains secure on the cart and to guide the cart clear of any obstacles. Upon arriving at the 1200-foot road, the plane will be lifted onto a truck and driven off the HRNM.
