WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) today announced the Milwaukee Soldiers Home, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as the recipient of the 2021 ACHP/HUD Secretary’s Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation.

This annual award recognizes developers, organizations, and agencies for their success in advancing the goals of historic preservation, while at the same time providing affordable housing and/or expanded economic opportunities for low- and moderate-income families and individuals.

WASHINGTON, DC –Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) Vice Chairman Jordan Tannenbaum signed an agreement on December 6 with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service (FS) and the National Conference of State Historic Preservation Officers that permits the FS to defer and phase its identification and consideration of historic properties for large landscape projects. This is an effort to move urgent projects forward while more effectively considering their effects on historic properties.

The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation will host its next business meeting on Wednesday, December 15, 2021, from 1:30 p.m.– 4:30 p.m. EDT. Due to continuing COVID-related precautions, the meeting will take place using Zoom conferencing. There will be no in-person attendance and, due to technical limitations, only ACHP and ACHP members and staff will be able to watch live. However, a recording of the meeting will be posted on the ACHP website and the ACHP YouTube Channel when the proceedings conclude.

In this episode of the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation's podcast, Preservation Perspectives, the ACHP commemorated Native American Heritage Month 2021 by talking with Shasta Gaughen, National Association of Tribal Historic Preservation Officers Chair, and Tribal Historic Preservation Officer for the Pala Band of the Mission Indians in California. Dr. Gaughen spoke with host, Luke Nichter, about what it's like to be a THPO, how ACHP's trainings have been a big help to THPOs, and what the federal government can do to better work with tribes on historic preservation.
