Traditional Knowledge and the Section 106 Process: Information for Federal Agencies and Other Participants explores the concept of traditional knowledge and clarifies its role in the Section 106 review process. The ACHP began work on the paper in response to the 2019 traditional knowledge session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. In conjunction with the session, the ACHP co-hosted a side event with the U.S. Forest Service, the Environmental Protection Agency and the State Department to draw attention to and talk with indigenous peoples about the importance of traditional knowledge in federal decision making. This discussion became the basis for the information paper.

In preparing this paper, the ACHP also worked with representatives of tribal nations and kanaka maoli (the indigenous people of the Hawaiian Islands) to develop appropriate ways to discuss traditional knowledge. The paper includes appendices with a small sample of information about traditional knowledge shared by tribal and kanaka maoli experts.
