Preservationists marked the 50th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) in 2016 and took the opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of the federal preservation program that was created by the NHPA. In conjunction with a public outreach effort, the ACHP analyzed the federal preservation program established by the NHPA and developed recommendations for actions that would improve the program to address current and future needs. 

The report's recommendations fall into the following categories.

• Improve Preservation Planning, Processes and Systems, Including Use of Appropriate Technology and Targeted Research
• Obtain Adequate and Sustainable Financial Support
• Encourage Private Investment
• Expand and Encourage Public Engagement
• Advance Equity and Inclusion
• Recognize the Full Range of the Nation’s Heritage
• Embrace and Respond to the Cultures, Views, and Concerns of Indigenous Peoples
• Enhance Further Appreciation for Heritage Through Formal and Informal Education
• Promote Collaboration and Partnership
• Address Climate Change, Disaster Planning, and Environmental Sustainability
