The ACHP hosted a meeting on April 18 with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Nuclear Energy Tribal Working Group to introduce the members to the National Historic Preservation Act and Section 106. Office of Native American Affairs Director Valerie Hauser gave an overview of the ACHP and how the office works to assist tribes. Office of Federal Agency Programs Director Reid Nelson talked about the Section 106 process. Working group members were encouraged to take the free webinar, What is Section 106?

The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation had its winter business meeting in San Francisco, California, with three days of engaging with preservationists on the west coast. Council members hosted a listening session at historic Angel Island State Park with more than 20 representatives of the Asian American community to discuss ways to better identify and interpret places important to the nation’s Asian American-Pacific Islander history and bring them into the national historic preservation movement’s consciousness. The Chairman’s Award for Achievement in Historic Preservation was presented to the Discover SF!
The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) formally endorsed a plan to support the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples at its Winter Business Meeting on March 1, 2013.
“This is an opportunity to promote better stewardship and protection of Native historic properties and sacred places, and in doing so helps to ensure survival of indigenous cultures,” said Milford Wayne Donaldson, FAIA, ACHP chairman. “The Declaration reinforces the agency’s principles and goals contained in our Native American Traditional Cultural Landscapes Action Plan and other works with Native Hawaiian organizations and tribes.”
