The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation met Nov. 14 in the Kennedy Caucus Room of the Russell Senate Office Building for its fall business meeting. Highlights included presentation of the Chairman’s Award for Achievement in Historic Preservation which went to the U.S. Forest Service and the Wing Luke Museum of the Asian Pacific American Experience for their Asian Pacific American Heritage Program. Council members also discussed plans for the 50th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act, including a forum hosted the previous day by the ACHP including 13 national organizations. They also discussed participation in the White House Tribal Nations Conference, taking place all week. Chairman Wayne Donaldson, Native American Member Leonard Forsman, and others were invited to participate in sessions regarding sacred sites and traditional cultural properties, as well as a tribal listening session.
Members also heard reports about several Section 106 issues including working with the Federal Real Property Council, Presidential Memoranda on Infrastructure, Permitting, and Transmission, and a proposed Northern Plains Energy Summit with tribes. They viewed a presentation on the plans for the Old Post Office Building’s renovation, to begin next year. The ACHP will have its winter business meeting March 6-7, 2014 in Washington, D.C.
